“I had a friend who was a producer, she was working at that time for another network. She needed to bring in a project,” Todd, 47, told HollywoodLife.com. “So she called me and said, ‘Can I do a sizzle reel with you?’ They did a sizzle reel with my family and it took them about 3 days. I thought it would go nowhere. Six weeks later, we got a call that said we have pitched your show to 10 networks and we have 9 offers.”
Todd said he was known in his community for being “a very strict disciplinarian.” At the time, the Chrisley family was unknown, and he believes that’s was part of the allure. “We were not famous,” he continued. “My kids did not grow up in Hollywood. They wanted a different approach.”
Speaking of Hollywood, Todd notes that his family doesn’t live like the Kardashians do. “We don’t live the same lifestyle as the Kardashians,” he said. “Our children don’t have the same access to wealth like that. Our kids are in school. I grew up in a society where if you talked about what you had, it was vulgar. So I try to make sure we reel some of that in, and we don’t put those kinds of things out there. I just don’t think that just because you’re putting it out there, it gives someone the right to break in and steal from you. Kim is a lovely, sweet person. Their family has always been very gracious and kind to ours since we came on the scene. My heart goes out to her. My heart goes out to anyone who has had something taken from them that they worked for by someone who didn’t.”
Todd also has a Christmas album, A Chrisley Christmas coming out on Nov. 4. The Chrisley patriarch has never had a singing career, so this was a incredible opportunity for him. “It was a wonderful experience that came along after my song came out with Sara Evans, which was released in season 4,” he said. “I had never been focused on a recording deal or a career. I feel so blessed to leave the album to my children and grandchildren forever. There’s a song, Underneath the Mistletoe, that I did with my wife. My girls came to me and said out of everything in our lives, that the greatest gift you have left us. Everything I do has a southern twist. Jana Kramer sings with me, too.”
The Chrisley Knows Best season 4 finale features two back-to-back episodes on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 10 p.m. ET on USA.
