If you know you’re about to indulge in some Halloween candy this weekend, start considering your post-treat workout now. Earlier this week, we spoke with celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson for easy exercises you can do at home to burn calories and tone up without weights or equipment.
If you need a fitness boost ahead of the weekend, you’re in luck. Gunnar Peterson, the trainer behind celebrities like Khloe and Kim Kardashian and Ciara, joined us for a Facebook Live this week for a quick full body workout that’s easy to do right at home. You can watch the full video right here, and read up on all of Gunnar’s best tips below.
To build muscle (which Gunnar explains helps to burn more calories) and a better butt, Gunnar says to try several different squat variations. First, he recommends doing traditional squats with your feet facing parallel and shoulder-width apart. Next up are sumo squats, which require you to turn your feet out as you squat (basically doing a second position plie). The last set is the most difficult, starting in a split stance and bending parallel to the ground.
If you want to work even more muscle groups, Gunnar says you can add hand weights to your squats doing a bicep curl as you straighten your legs.
As for what you eat, Gunnar said it’s all about the quantity, quality and timing of your meals. Meaning you should be paying attention to how much you eat (Gunnar told us your stomach is only the size of your first!) how healthy the food you eat is and making sure you eat small meals throughout the day.
“Have a glass of room temperature water about 10 minutes before your meal,” Gunnar said, sharing a trick to help suppress your appetite and keep you from overeating. “Have your protein first, then your vegetable and especially for your evening meal, have your complex carbohydrate last.”
Gunnar also stresses that it’s important to get seven or eight hours of sleep each night to give your body enough time to recover after workouts and to help keep your cortisol levels lower so your body doesn’t store as much fat.
