Everyone seems to have something to say about Colin Kaepernick’s wildly controversial protests during the National Anthem. Now, retired baseball star Derek Jeter has come to the quarterback’s defense. Find out what he had to say!
Even in his retirement, Derek Jeter, 42, is still viewed as a leader by all athletes and he continues to take on that role. On Oct. 26 at the 20th Anniversary celebration for his Turn 2 Foundation, Jeter spoke out to defend the controversial actions of a fellow professional athlete, Colin Kaepernick, 28. The star quarterback has received a tidal wave of backlash since August when he refused to stand for the National Anthem at a preseason game as a protest against the current state of racial affairs in the United States.
“If you have the platform to speak up and you choose to do so, then that is your prerogative,” Jeter told the crowd at his event at the Wall Street Cipriani, according to Page Six. “When you have this platform, you should try to impact people’s lives in a positive way, and that is what we are teaching these kids in our leadership program. Your voice is powerful.”
Jeter joins a long list of celebrities and athletes who have spoken out in support for Colin’s peaceful protest. Barack Obama, 55, even defended Colin in a press conference, saying, “I’d rather have young people engaged in the argument and trying to think through how they can be part of our democratic process than those who are just sitting on the sidelines.”
However, people such as Sarah Palin, 52, and Fox Sports’ Clay Travis, 37, and Jason Whitlock, 49, have shamed Colin for kneeling during the Anthem, citing that he is not relatable to the cause because of his $114 million contract, and that his form of protest doesn’t make a difference, but is rather disrespectful. Palin took to Facebook to share her thoughts, writing: “GOD AND COUNTRY GAVE YOU THIS OPPORTUNITY. You can’t acknowledge that? Then on behalf of every Vet I’m privileged to know: GET THE HELL OUT.” Yikes.
The 49ers star quarterback, who is half-black and half-white, has not changed his ways, despite the critics, and continues to kneel to call to attention the issues plaguing the US, specifically the black community. “I’m going to continue to stand with the people that are being oppressed. To me, this is something that has to change. When there’s significant change and I feel that flag represents what it’s supposed to represent, and this country is representing people the way that it’s supposed to, I’ll stand,” Colin said at a press conference on Aug. 28.
Wow — we hope that Colin’s actions draw more awareness to the issues he is combating and that more powerful people, like Jeter, join him in solidarity. HollywoodLifers, do you agree with Derek Jeter and support Colin Kaepernick’s protest? Let us know in the comments below!
