Oh, no! Justin Timberlake shared a proud selfie as he voted for the next president of the United States, but by doing so, he unintentionally broke Tennessee law. Could JT go to jail over this?
Justin Timberlake, 35, was so excited to vote that he just had to document the process on Instagram on Oct. 24 — but TMZ reports that JT could be sent to jail for 30 days for photographing himself in the Memphis, TN voting booth!
Under Tennessee law, voters are prohibited from recording audio or taking photos in polling places — and Justin caught the attention of law officials. His case is “under review”, according to the Shelby County D.A.’s Office, and he could be facing a $50 fine…and a 30-day jail sentence!
“Hey! You! Yeah, YOU! I just flew from LA to Memphis to #rockthevote !!! No excuses, my good people!” Justin wrote on his pic. “There could be early voting in your town too. If not, November 8th! Choose to have a voice! If you don’t, then we can’t HEAR YOU! Get out and VOTE! #excerciseyourrighttovote.” Little did he know that his act was illegal!
It’s unlikely that Justin will face serious consequences; the site reports that no one has been prosecuted under the law, which was passed last year. An election official board also tells the site that s/he is “clearly against prosection”, and thinks JT should be “commended for inspiring people to get out and vote”. Agreed!
HollywoodLifers, do you think Justin should be fined for breaking the law?
