What a way to celebrate turning 90! When Chuck Berry celebrated his milestone birthday on Oct. 18, he announced some huge news: A new album is on the way in 2017, his first in nearly 40 years. Find out more right here!
Simply titled Chuck, Chuck‘s first album since 1979’s Rock It will feature a whole slew of original songs that the legendary rock guitarist wrote and produced himself. Pretty impressive for a man who just turned 90, huh? And to make the record even more special, he declared that the album is honoring his wife of 68 years, Thermetta “Toddy” Berry.
“This record is dedicated to my beloved Toddy,” Chuck said in a statement. “My darlin’, I’m growing old! I’ve worked on this record for a long time. Now I can hang up my shoes!”
Seriously, how sweet is that?! While there aren’t a ton of details about the album just yet, it will likely sound a lot like the material Chuck’s fans have jammed to for years, as he recorded the album with his longtime backing band including his and Thermetta’s children Charles Berry Jr. on guitar and Ingrid Berry on harmonica. Also featured on Chuck are Chuck’s bassist Jimmy Marsala (who has spent 40 years playing with Chuck), pianist Robert Lohr and drummer Keith Robinson.
During a tribute concert at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — to which he was inducted in 1987 — in 2012, Chuck revealed that he had several songs stocked up that were written more than 20 years ago and that he was intending on releasing at some point. We certainly think his 90th birthday is the perfect occasion for fans to hear new stuff!
Chuck will be available in 2017 on Dualtone Records. The album’s release date and more CD details will be revealed in the coming weeks. For now, we wish Chuck the happiest of birthdays!
