If it’s up to the anchors on the ‘Today’ show, Billy Bush will not be returning. They actually don’t mind that he’s suspended, a new report claims, adding that if he is let go, they have no problem with it at all.
Billy Bush “hasn’t really endeared himself to the rest of the cast and crew anyway, so they’re fine with him leaving, if that’s what the decision is,” an insider told People. Of course right now, he’s under suspension from Today, following the tapes that leaked from 2005 showing him engaging in an inappropriate conversation with Donald Trump before shooting an Access Hollywood segment.
“Ever since [Ryan] Lochte, a lot of people have thought that he was a liability anyway,” the source told the magazine. “Tamron [Hall] doesn’t like him and they have always been uncomfortable around each other. Al [Roker] doesn’t speak to him, like at all. There is no love lost there. Matt [Lauer] is okay with him, not friends, but okay. He doesn’t have much of a relationship with Savannah [Guthrie]. So it won’t be a loss to any of them personally if he doesn’t come back.”
“The network and producers are going to have to decide if he’s such a liability that they have to take stronger action. Does anyone tune in to Today to watch Billy? Probably not really. So if he leaves, it’s not a big deal,” the insider added, saying it’s much more than just something he did 11 years ago. “The feeling is, ‘Is he so compromised that he can’t be a neutral journalist? Can people see him as being a professional?’ It really seems like it’s time for him to go. We’re all waiting to see what happens.”
Following the release of the tapes on Oct. 7, Billy released an apology. “Obviously I’m embarrassed and ashamed. It’s no excuse, but this happened eleven years ago — I was younger, less mature, and acted foolishly in playing along. I’m very sorry.” An email from show executive, Noah Oppenheim also confirmed that he had been suspended. “Let me be clear — there is simply no excuse for Billy’s language and behavior on that tape. NBC has decided to suspend Billy, pending further review of this matter,” the email read.
