2016 has a record number of people and groups up for the award, with a grand total of 376 candidates nominated, besting 2014’s 278. Of those up for the honor, 228 are individuals and 148 are organizations which are selected by former Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, members of worldwide governments and university professors. This years group goes across a crazy gamut with everyone from Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, 70, for his “vigorous peace through strength ideology,” — yes, feel free to laugh or get sick about that — to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, 33, receiving nods.
Nominations were made at the beginning of the year, with a short list determined by springtime. A panel of five members of Norway’s parliament determines the eventual winner after an extensive review process. The 2016 frontrunners include Russian human rights activist Svetlana Gannushkina, whose Civic Assistance program has helped 50,000 migrants and refugees since 1990, despite a total lack of support by the Russian government. She’s won numerous related awards and is considered a favorite.
The Syria Civil Defense, a 3,000 strong group also known as the “White Helmets,” are also thought to be high on the short list, as the selfless rescuers rush as first responders to bombing sites to pull victims from the rubble in the war-torn nation. The big-hearted and brave volunteers work under the motto that “to save a life is to save all of humanity” and were recently profiled in a Netflix documentary.
HollywoodLifers, are you interested in who wins the Nobel Peace Prize? Or are you just hoping it’s anyone but Donald Trump?
