In his new movie ‘Middle School: The Worst Years Of My Life,’ Jacob Hopkins gets into character as the school bully. In our EXCLUSIVE interview, the actor opened up about being able to give the other characters a ‘hard time’ on screen.
HL: Tell me about your character, Miller. Was it difficult being a bit of a bully?
JH: Miller is a tough guy who pretty much loves to intimidate anyone he feels like on any given day. He gives Rafe a hard time and doesn’t think anything of it. I didn’t want to play the stereotypical bully. I’m the complete opposite of Miller, so as an actor it’s interesting to go that route.
HL: Had you read the ‘Middle School’ books in advance? Was there anything specific from the books you wish had made it into the movie that didn’t?
JH: Yes, I read the book! There was nothing specific really, I think everything in the film was great!
HL: What was your favorite scene to film and why?
JH: I had a prank scene dressed up as the school mascot. It was really fun to film! Caw-caw!!
HL: Who would you say you bonded with the most on set?
JH: I really enjoyed working with all the kids – we were like a family!
HL: Did you get to meet/interact with James Patterson at all on set?
JH: I did meet him and he’s a really awesome guy!
HL: There are a lot of big celebrities. Who was the most fun to work with?
JH: I worked with Adam Pally and he’s hilarious and the king of improv!
HL: So much rule breaking goes down in the film, but did you guys play any pranks on set?
JH: We just really had a lot fun together and bonded as friends. There wasn’t one day on set that wasn’t full of us cracking up over something! Football in the hallways between takes, always surprising each other with something.
HL: Who are your idols? Who do you look up to the most as an actor?
JH: My mom and dad have had a huge impact on my life, so I look up to them. As a actor, I would say Hugh Jackman.
HL: Favorite celebs to follow on social media?
JH: Hugh Jackman and Robert Downey Jr.
HL: One person you dream of working with on TV/in movies one day?
JH: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., and Hugh Jackman — can you tell I’m a Marvel fan?
