If you were given a certain amount of time on this earth, what would you do with it? In ‘No Tomorrow,’ Xavier Holliday believes there is only 8 months and 12 days until an the world-ending apocalypse, and he enlists plain Jane Evie Callahan to assist him on a wild adventure until that happens.
Evie Callahan (Tori Anderson) is a 30-year-old clumsy yet adorable blonde who can’t seem to find total happiness in any aspect of her life and still says “Holy smokes!” Her job at a boxing warehouse is lacking momentum, her boss’s breath smells like “barf,” her family is obsessed with her ex-boyfriend and her ex-boyfriend is obsessed with her. Nothing truly seems to be going as well as it could be. The only thing Evie is holding on to is the hot, scruffy man she met at a farmer’s market a few weeks back and the hope that she can find him again.
Fate brings Evie and the guy from the farmer’s market together and their attraction is undeniable in the Oct. 4 premiere of the CW’s No Tomorrow. The mystery man is introduced as Xavier Holliday (Joshua Sasse). Evie frolics through Xavier’s house, playing arcade games and basketball, thinking he must be a wealthy bachelor with a lot of time on his hands. Alas, there is the catch – as there always appears to be with seemingly perfect men. Xavier has a bit of a quirk – he is a believer in the apocalypse and outrightly proclaims to Evie, with a 223 slide powerpoint, “The world is ending in 8 months and 12 days.”
While we don’t necessarily know if Xavier’s theory has any merit, he did show Evie the exact asteroid he thinks will destroy Earth in a matter of months. For the time being, he has her convinced and introduced his “Apocalyst,” the bucket-list he plans to complete before the world ends by crossing off one item a day. He invites Evie on this journey with him, which she agrees to try, saying she always wanted to do “wild” things such as putting tin foil in the microwave and going on a pogo stick. We find Xavier’s bucket-list is much more R-rated, involving sleeping with different women, going to the beach with his cousin who’s in jail and much more.
The first item Evie and Xavier check off is extreme four-wheeling through the hills of the desert, embracing the whole “live like you were dying” mantra. Of course, this is followed by a seriously steamy make-out session between the two. But, of course, things go awry when Xavier takes Evie’s phone and quits her job for her in a vicious e-mail to her boss.
After a series of events and a near-death experience, Evie realizes how truly fragile and short life is. In her awkward and charming way, Evie officially takes up Xavier’s challenge and makes her own “Apocalyst.” The two immediately cross off #1 – microwave tin foil.
While the giddy and witty characters in No Tomorrow are sure to bring a smile to your face, it’s the overall message that’s the best part of this show. Xavier Holliday reminds us all to be selfish, live for the moment and continue to cross things off your list that you do for yourself.
