And the flag is thrown for – having fun? Washington Redskins’ Josh Norman pulled off a major play during a NFL game on Oct. 2, but he then got sacked with a 15-yard penalty for ‘shooting a bow and arrow.’ Really. Click to watch.
“After the play [was] over, unsportsmanlike conduct,” NFL referee Jeff Triplette said during the Oct. 2 game between the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns, according to 247 Sports. What exactly did Josh, 28, do to deserve this 15-yard penalty? “Shooting a bow and arrow,” the ref said. Um – okay.
What a bummer! Josh had just pulled off his first interception of the season, snatching a toss from Browns quarterback Cody Kessler, 23. He clearly felt like he was on point like Hawkeye, nailing the bull’s eye with his imaginary arrow. Obviously, the ref wasn’t thrilled with Josh’s celebration.
Is it any surprise that the fans weren’t happy with this call? “These flags are out of control,” one fan said, including the bow and arrow emoji before tweeting at Josh to “keep grinding #GreatTalentToWatch.” Others told the NFL that they wanted a football league where players don’t get slapped with a 15-yard penalty for miming a bow and arrow or for “excessive booty work.” After all, the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ Antonio Brown was fined $9,115 for twerking after scoring during their Sept. 12 game against (oddly enough) the Washington Redskins, per USA Today.
Most viewers, even those where weren’t Washington fans, started in on blasting the NFL as the “no fun league.” The league has earned this nickname after they’ve been cracking down on in-game celebrations, to the point that it almost seems ridiculous to loyal fans.

It's actually hilarious how shooting a bow and arrow is an unsportsman like conduct penalty, yet it's an actual sport…@NFL

The penalty on Josh Norman for his "shooting a bow and arrow" celebration is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen in the NFL.

Even with the penalty, Washington would go on to win the game, 31-20. By the end of the season, Josh is going to have a huge highlight reel of odd and awkward penalty calls. When Josh went head-to-head with his rival, New York Giants’ wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. 23, during the game on Sept. 25, things got weird. When Odell jumped to possibly catch the ball, Josh grabbed Odell and lifted him, very similar the iconic finale of Dirty Dancing. First, pulling a Patrick Swayze, now this? What will Josh do (and get penalized for) during their Oct. 9 game against the Baltimore Ravens?
What do you think about Josh getting penalized for his “bow and arrow” gesture, HollywoodLifers? Do you think the ref was right or that the NFL has turned into the “No Fun League?”
