‘SNL’ viewers were taken aback when Weekend Update anchor Michael Che let the n-word slip during a bit about 49ers player Colin Kaepernick. Click through to watch the shocking moment from the October 1 episode!
“I don’t understand this. If the national anthem was so important, how did they even know someone was kneeling? That’s how boring the National Anthem is. Halfway through, you’re looking around the stadium like, ‘I wonder what the backup quarterback for the 49ers is up to?’
“It’s mostly white guys that are upset,” Michael said. “And I can understand why white guys love the National Anthem so much – because this country’s always been great for white guys. You absolutely should defend the National Anthem. If I was white, I’d always defend the National Anthem.
“I expect white guys to defend the National Anthem like I expected Phylicia Rashad to defend Bill Cosby. I’m sure when people were protesting the Cosby Show, Clair Huxtable was like, ‘I don’t know what he did to y’all, but n***a made me rich!'”
Needless to say, people watching Saturday Night Live at home were shocked (and kind of impressed) that Michael managed to drop the N-bomb live, on air. It’s not unprecedented to say it on Saturday Night Live. Michael’s fellow cast member Sasheer Zamata said it during season 41 on Weekend Update, much to similar shock; Kanye West did so as well, during the same season, while performing “Highlights” of The Life of Pablo. And lest we forget Will Ferrell singing it as his Robert Goulet character back in 2000. Point is, it’s been done. Still it’s always a shock when it’s heard, as SNL fans expressed on Twitter:
Anybody catch Michael Che say the N word 😂 that probably won't go over well the boss #SNLPremiere

WAIT, can you say the n word on SNL????? Because they just did. Isn't this network tv?

What many people aren’t focusing on is the speech Michael kept giving after the n-word drop. “And I’m sure it’s an inconvenient time to bring up such an inconvenient issue during a football game, but it’s a protest,” Michael said. “That’s the whole point of a protest…Listen, Colin Kaepernick is not the only one trying to raise awareness during a football game for a sad cause. They’re turning uniforms pink for breast cancer awareness tomorrow, and nobody’s upset about that. I bet if the police went around shooting unarmed boobies, everybody would take a knee,” he ended with a shrug.
