Protesters gathered in San Diego after an unarmed, mentally ill black man was fatally shot by police on September 27. Click through to see powerful photos, and emotional video, of their stand for justice in El Cajon, California.
Police in El Cajon, California, a neighborhood in San Diego, shot and killed a black man allegedly acting “erratically” at a strip mall after he pulled something from his pocket and assumed a “shooting stance,” according to law enforcement officials. When the unnamed man, in his 30s, reportedly did not comply with orders to put down what was in his hands, one officer attempted to subdue him with a stun gun, and another officer shot him.
It was not made known what the man actually had in his pocket, but El Cajon Police Chief Jeff Davis confirmed in a late night press conference on September 27 that it was not a weapon. They didn’t release specifics on what he said when he allegedly failed to comply. The man was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, and later died of his injuries.
A woman believed to be the victim’s sister called police around 2:00pm outside the Los Panchos restaurant, saying that her brother “was not acting like himself,” and walking in and out of traffic. After the shooting, she was seen in a video posted by NBC San Diego, sitting on the ground, screaming and crying while wearing hospital scrubs. She said that her brother was mentally ill. “I just called for help, and you (the police) came and killed him,” she said. “Why couldn’t you guys tase him? Why, why, why, why?”
Angry, but peaceful protesters gathered at the scene of the shooting to mourn over the shooting of yet another unarmed black man in the United States. When it was later revealed the man had died, the crowds at the scene, and at the El Cajon Police Department, mounted to around 100 protesters, including community and church leaders. They chanted “black lives matter!” and “hands up, don’t shoot!”

The shooting comes on the heels of the death of Keith Lamont Scott in Charlotte, North Carolina, which has sparked massive protests throughout the city. Keith was reportedly reading a book in his car when officers asked him to get out, because they believed he had weed. Keith was unarmed, and dash cam footage shows him walking backward toward police with his hands up before being fatally shot.
