As the world watches to see what happens between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in the first presidential debate on Sept. 26, there’s one man who will lead the chaos: NBC anchor Lester Holt. Not familiar with who he is? Get to know Lester right here!
1. He’s registered to vote Republican.
Although Lester, 57, will have to be unbiased while moderating for Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, he’s technically on Donald’s side — at least according to past elections. Donald has accused Lester of being a Democrat, but he’s actually registered as a Republican, as discovered by Time magazine.
2. He never graduated from college.
Lester has made quite the name for himself since beginning his career in 1981, but what’s even more impressive is that he did so without having a bachelor’s degree to back it up. While he did attend California State University-Sacramento, he left after two years to work at a local radio station. Amidst his plenty of career achievements with the likes of CBS, MSNBC, and NBC News, Lester has since received an honorary doctorate from his former alma mater as well as Pepperdine University.
3. He’s the first African-American debate moderator in almost 25 years.
The last time a presidential debate had a black moderator was 1992, when then-ABC News anchor Carole Simpson moderated for Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush. Vice-president debates have had black moderators since, but this is the first major debate to have one in 24 years.
4. He’s not just recognizable from newscasts.
For three years straight (2006 to 2008), Lester was the announcer for the Westminster Kennel Dog Show for the USA Network. Kind of an interesting way to get practice for moderating a presidential debate, huh?
5. This isn’t his first time moderating.
Lester did get some actual moderating practice with a Democratic debate in January, sharing the job with fellow NBC anchor Andrea Mitchell. He wasn’t afraid to ask touchy questions then, so we can only imagine what he’ll do this time around!
HollywoodLifers, do you think Lester will make a good moderator?
