This is SO heartbreaking. Dalton Prager and his wife Katie Prager, the couple with a real-life ‘Fault in Our Stars’ love story, had to say a sad goodbye on Sept. 17 when he passed away. But even more tragic, it was over FaceTime because Katie was too sick to be by Dalton’s side.
Dalton had been facing complications from cystic fibrosis, and his battle sadly came to an end on Sept. 17 when he died in a St. Louis hospital. As much as his wife Katie wanted to be there for her husband’s final moments, she has been dealing with her own issues from cystic fibrosis and is confined to hospice care in a Kentucky facility. Because they couldn’t be together, Katie and Dalton were forced to say their goodbyes via video chat.
Katie’s mom, Debra Donovan, was by her daughter’s side during the painful farewell, revealing that Dalton was so sick they weren’t sure if he could hear his wife tell him “I love you” for the last time. We can’t even imagine how heartbreaking that was.
In the weeks prior to his death, Dalton was on a ventilator in an intensive care unit as a result of complications that arose from a 2014 lung transplant. The 25-year-old was diagnosed with lymphoma months after his surgery, and his health continued to deteriorate leading up to his passing as he contracted pneumonia and a viral infection. Katie’s family pushed for Dalton to fly to Kentucky so he could be with Katie in his final days, but like his wife, he was too sick to travel.
The last time the real-life Fault In Our Stars couple got to see each other was for their fifth wedding anniversary on July 16. The two met online when they were both 18, and insisted on meeting in person despite the risk it posed for Katie’s health. Despite the fact that their romance ultimately led to both of them getting sicker, Katie, now 26, told CNN that she has no regrets about it.
“It gave me some of the best years of my life,” she said. “I’d rather have five years of being in love and just really completely happy than 20 years of not having anybody.”
Dalton’s funeral is set to take place on Sept. 21 in Missouri, as it is where his family lives. Whether Katie will be able to make it is unclear, but we’re sure she’ll do what she can to get there.
HollywoodLifers, send your love to Katie as she mourns the heartbreaking loss of her husband.
