How terrifying! Eight people were taken to the hospital after a stabbing attack occurred at a mall in Minnesota, which ended with the suspect, who was dressed as a security guard, being fatally shot by an off-duty police officer. Read on for the full details about the attack.
The stabbing attack took place around 8:15 p.m. on Sept. 17, at Crossroads Center mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota, after which eight people were taken to St. Cloud Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, St. Cloud Police Chief Blair Anderson said during a news conference. Thankfully, only one person was admitted to the hospital. Blair said the unidentified suspect was wearing a “private security uniform.” How scary is that?
“At approximately 8 p.m., an armed suspect entered the Crossroads Mall. That individual made some references to Allah and we confirmed that he asked at least one person if they were Muslim before assaulting them,” Blair said, according to KSTP. Blair said it was a lone suspect, and did not call the stabbing a terrorist attack, saying the motive is currently unknown. The off-duty police officer who shot and killed the suspect was from another jurisdiction, though Blair did not say where from.
The mall was on lockdown following the incident, but police expected those left inside to be released early on Sept. 18, and that the building “will remain closed through Sunday as investigators continue to process multiple crime scenes within the building,” according to KSTP.
Harley Exsted and Tama Exsted of Isle, Minnesota, happened to be in St. Cloud to watch their son’s college golf tournament, were in the mall during the attack. “All of a sudden I heard pop pop pop,” Harley said. “I thought someone tipped over a shelf. All of a sudden these people started running. I just saw everybody running our way.” There have also been reports that some shots were fired during the stabbing. The couple were unharmed and helped another woman who was running to her car.
“I went closer to the mall entrance by J.C. Penney’s and I was looking at some jeans and all the sudden people were just running in chaos,” Ashley Bayne, another person who was in the mall, told WCCO. “They were screaming, ‘Someone’s stabbing people in the mall,’ and people were just really frantic and were running.” “When I got in my car to get out people were speeding out of there. By the time I left my coworker had texted me saying they had all gone into lockdown in the mall. There were no notifications in the mall at all, it was just people running and screaming,” Ashley said. We can’t imagine how scared they must have been.
Our hearts go out to the victims of this attack and their families on this sad day.
