Maggie Smith wins again! The ‘Downton Abbey’ star won her third Best Supporting Actress Emmy for her role as the Dowager Countess, shockingly beating out ‘Game of Thrones’ stars Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey and Maisie Williams! And Maggie didn’t even show up!
Maggie, 81, nabbed yet another Emmy for her role as the Dowager Countess on Downton Abbey. This was Downton Abbey’s final season, and Maggie gave one incredible performance. While we love Maggie, this was definitely a shocker. Emilia, 29, Lena, 42, and Maisie, 19, were all fantastic as Daenerys, Cersei and Arya in Game of Thrones season 6. All three of them had huge storylines and wowed us all. Critics and fans alike believed this was the year that Lena would finally take home the win, especially since Cersei’s rise from the ashes was a pivotal storyline, but it was just not meant to be.
Host Jimmy Kimmel, 48, joked about Maggie not ever showing up to the Emmys during one of his bits. She’s won 3 times and been nominated 9 times, but has never attended the Emmys. Wow! That’s crazy! But we understand. It would mean traveling thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean and United States to attend!
The ladies up for the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series this year included Emilia, Maisie, Lena, Constance Zimmer, 45, Maggie Smith, 81, and Maura Tierney, 51. Game of Thrones scored 3 acting nominations in one category.
All the ladies brought their fashion A-game on the red carpet before the show. Emilia stunned in a sparkling nude dress by Atelier Versace. Maura was sophisticated in a chic black gown. Constance brought color to the red carpet in a white and pink gown with floral detailing. Maisie took a fashion risk in a floral black dress. She also rocked new bangs!
