A ‘pipe bomb-type device’ was detonated on the site of an annual military 5k race on Saturday, September 17 in Seaside Park, New Jersey. The explosion, which did not injure anyone, was confirmed to be a serious attack, and not a prank. Click through to learn more about the incident.
The explosive device detonated in a garbage can on the route of the Seaside Semper Five Marine Corps Charity 5K around 9:30am on the Jersey Shore. Determined be a “pipe bomb-type device” by New Jersey State Police Bomb Squad, the bomb was just one of several found in the trashcan; the other devices, which were all wired together, did not go off.
The 1600 people participating in the 5k to benefit Marines and sailors were scheduled to pass by the area around the time that the bomb detonated, but the start of the race had been delayed when an unattended backpack was found near the starting line. Because of this, there were no injuries.
“It’s obvious it was meant to affect the run, the fact that it went off at 9:35,” said Ocean County Prosecutor spokesman Al Della Fave. “We’ve evacuated within a four-block perimeter. Traffic into Seaside Park is closed, but (motorists) are allowed to go to Seaside Heights.” To get a better idea, around 3000 people were evacuated, including the 1600 runners and those on the beach.
Garbage cans were checked by the Ocean County Prosecutors Office Arson Unit, FBI, ATF and NJ State Police Bomb Squad. ATF New Jersey and Philadelphia Arson Explosive groups also helped monitor the situation. Bomb-sniffing dogs have completed a sweep of the area and found no additional devices. Investigators are looking for the suspect or suspects, and trying to determine the motive for the crime. Seaside Park residents are being urged to avoid the area at this time.
