This is SO cool! Uber announced on Sept.14 that the company is now testing self-driving cars in Pittsburgh, the first city in the U.S. to get this exciting new feature! So how exactly is this even happening, and is it even safe? HollywoodLife.com has ALL the details!
Well, we are officially jealous of everyone who lives in Pittsburgh! Beginning Sept. 14, Uber passengers who live in the Steel City can hail a self-driving car through its service! But fear not, HollywoodLifers – the requested car will come with not one, but TWO drivers to ensure its safety!
Here’s the deal: for those Uber users who have agreed to participate in the company’s self-driving pilot program, they’ll have the chance to score a ride in a self-driving Ford Fusion! And not only that, but each ride will bring along a safety driver — there to take over should an emergency arise — as well as a co-pilot to keep track of the car and route. The co-pilot is in charge of sending any notes to Uber developers to make future rides even smoother and better! Uber also has plans in the future to expand the program to include 100 self-driving Volvos.
And to ensure that the program is even safer, Uber announced that cameras will record passengers who are part of the self-driving program. According to the company, this footage will allow for improved user experience. “If you think about it, every month, Uber drives over a billion miles,” Anthony Levandowski, the leader of Uber’s self-driving program, explained to BuzzFeed. “That data gives us insight into how a city works, where are people driving, where are they getting into accidents, how pickups and drop-offs work.”
We can think of two celebs who might not be so quick to try this. Lorde, 19, hilariously tweeted that her Uber driver didn’t even recognize her back in July! “Uber driver currently busting a nut about the fact that there was a ‘celebrity passenger’ just before me,” she wrote. Meanwhile, Kendall Jenner, 20, was banned from Uber back in Aug, with big sis Kim Kardashian, 35, tweeting, “Ugh I had to drive @kendalljenner around tonight b/c she’s banned from Uber!. As for the reason for the ban? None was given!
HollywoodLifers, what do you think of Uber’s self-driving cars? Would you hop in one?
