‘Project Runway’ is BACK and the season 15 premiere kicked off with 16 designers — but not for long! Just as the designers started to feel comfortable Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn turned their party upside down, throwing them right into an unconventional challenge.
Another year, another batch of talented designers that will compete to take home the final prize on Project Runway — and as the designers meet and mingle we get to learn a little bit about everyone’s background, (although to be honest, nothing ever really catches my attention until I see them on the runway).
Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn arrive and tell the designers their first challenge is starting immediately — and the party decorations are the materials. An unconventional challenge — rejoice!
Tim reminds them to be true to who they are as a designer and gives them five minutes to collect materials — and, as you can imagine, mayhem ensues. They seem to grab everything that isn’t nailed down! Glasses break and the pretty welcoming party is quickly ripped to shreds and discarded into each designer’s respective bucket.
Now it’s off to design. Tim enters the work room at 11AM and tells the designers that they’ll have until 9PM that night. Cue the nerves.
While I’m all for a glitter moment, I wish Brik had decided on a sparkling mini, skirt, or shorts — glitter bell bottoms just seem extreme and I’m nervous the final result will seem sloppy. I’m completely surprised when, later in the episode, the majority of the workroom raves over the pants. More on them later.

Tim makes the rounds and it becomes clear that Jenni, Dexter and Ian need to really rev up their designs.
Time doesn’t seem to be on Erin’s side. While I appreciate the concept, I hope it can come together nicely. I also got so excited when she collected all the striped straws and am bummed to see she isn’t using them.
The next day, the designers send the models down to the Sally Beauty Salon, where they really bring their looks to life. Accessories from the JustFab accessories wall puts the finishing touches on the designs.
It looks like glitter threw up all over Brik’s workstation and Erin still doesn’t even have anything on the dress form. Now that the looks are really coming together I must say I really love how well constructed Alex’s dress is.
The designers send their looks down the runway and judge Zac Posen calls it the best beginning he’s had in the five years he has been on the show. Those are bold words!
Tasha’s look is a favorite with the judges — especially because it really reflects her as a designer.
While everyone in the work room was ready to hop on Brik’s psychedelic glitter train, the judges, (thank goodness), were hesitant to join. Don’t get me wrong, I totally appreciate the structured shoulder detailing but he spent so much time on the pants the top did feel mismatched — and that’s the judges biggest problem with the look. Speaking of looks, is it just me or is Brik channeling Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall with those flowing wavy locks?
Erin’s bold, banana yellow look is a favorite among the judges — although at first it seemed like she wouldn’t be able to pull it together in time, she finished and took home the winning title! Considering it looked like time management might be a problem I’m so impressed with how neat and polished her design is. I cannot wait to see what else she dreams up this season!
Unfortunately for Ian, his lack of creativity and desire to really dress up his look sent him packing — he should’ve taken Tim’s advice more seriously! Honestly, after Ashley’s amazing Polaroid dress last season I would’ve steered clear from using the photos if all he was going to do was attach them to a seemingly shapeless shift dress. (Too harsh?)
What did you think of the premiere? Do you already have a favorite designer?
