All of the ‘America’s Got Talent’ judges have high hopes for Grace VanderWaal whether she wins Season 11 or not, but Simon Cowell may have the most confidence in the preteen superstar. He compared her ‘AGT’ journey to Kelly Clarkson’s on ‘American Idol’!
“Kelly knew who she wanted to be as an artist. And I felt the same thing with Grace,” Simon told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “That confidence, you don’t need to say anything to them. Just do it your way and when you have that kind of talent you just jave to trust it.”
Wow, what a compliment! We knew that Simon, 56, could feel that Grace is destined for big things from the start of the season, as he called her “The next Taylor Swift“ after her very first audition. But considering Simon also watched a phenom like Kelly Clarkson go from girl next door to superstar on American Idol, it’s pretty insane that he would compare little 12-year-old Grace to two pop legends!
Then again, he’s not far off. Grace established herself as a front runner on AGT from her first performance (which earned her the Golden Buzzer from Howie Mandel) and buzz continued to surround her until her second performance that was more than two months later. Grace’s unique voice and ukulele playing won the hearts of America, as well as her humbly shy personality. Kelly wasn’t a preteen nor did she play an instrument when she auditioned for Idol, but her diamond-in-the-rough type beginning is certainly reminiscent of Grace’s!
As if Grace hadn’t blown everyone away enough all season, she had perhaps her best performance ever on the Sept. 13 finale performance show. Once again bringing her ukulele to the stage, Grace chose an upbeat original called “Clay” that really showed off her mad chops and proved that a Kelly or Taylor comparison is extremely accurate. Even if Grace doesn’t win like Kelly did, there’s no denying she’s destined for some big things — who knows, maybe even a collab with Kelly!
