What an amazing act of heroism! A Maryland bus driver, Renita Smith, saved a whopping 20 elementary school students from her school bus after it mysteriously began to smoke. The bus eventually burst into flames, but thanks to Renita’s bravery, not one child was harmed! See chilling footage of the burning bus here.
A College Park, Maryland school bus driver, reportedly named Reneita Smith, was hailed for her heroic actions after the bus she was driving caught fire on Sept. 12. The fire was reported at around 4:45 p.m. along the 9600 block of 51st Avenue in College Park, according to Mark Brady, the public information officer for Prince George’s County, MD Fire and EMS Department. The blaze apparently originated near one of the rear wheels.
And if that’s not scary enough, 20 children from Glenarden Woods Elementary School were on the bus when the fire began, starting with smoke coming from the back of the bus. Luckily Reneita sprang into action and got every last student off of the bus and away from danger quickly and efficiently, WTVR reported.
She “was able to remain calm throughout the ordeal” as the vehicle was evacuated, Mark said. And good thing she did, as the bus eventually burst into flames and was completely destroyed. “A big THANK YOU to our school bus driver Reneita Smith who just saved 20 elementary school kids from a bus fire that completely destroyed the bus,” a man named Fazlul Kabir posted on Facebook on the day of the incident.
“Reneita [not only] took each one of the 20 kids from the bus one by one, but also went into the empty bus again to check if everyone was out, while it was still burning.” Wow — talk about an act of courage! But apparently for Reneita, she was just doing what she had to do. “I am a mom of two kids,” Fazlul recalled Reneita saying as the bus burned. “It’s my job to save them.”
Thank goodness no one was injured in the fire, and most kids were picked up from the scene by their parents, according to Mark. As for the bus, it sat there and burned, which was captured on video by a Branchville Volunteer Fire Company firefighter’s dashboard camera. The clip shows smoke and flames coming from the empty school bus. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
