Does the song ‘Ice, Ice Baby’ ring any bells? If not, please allow us to introduce Vanilla Ice, a rapper who once rocked the music charts in the early 90’s and is now competing on ‘DWTS’ season 23 with partner Witney Carson. These are the most intriguing facts about the old school star!
1. ‘Ice, Ice Baby’ was the biggest hip hop song, like, ever!
Vanilla Ice, 48, (real name Robert Matthew Van Winkle) came out with the “Ice, Ice Baby” single in 1990, and it was the FIRST hip hop song to ever make it to #1 on the Billboard charts. The hit has been used in all types of movie soundtracks, including Ice Age, and 13 Going On 30. He wrote the song when he was just 16, and, like a blast from the past, Vanilla danced the cha-cha to it on the latest episode of DWTS.
2. He needs to step up his game a little bit on DWTS.
Dancing with professional partner Witney Carson on the Sept. 12 premiere episode, Vanilla’s rendition of the cha-cha was a little lackluster, according to the judges, who gave him a score of 25/40. Not terrible, but not great either. If Vanilla wants to take home the Mirror Ball, he needs to put some extra OOMPH in his step.
3. He’s got that bad boy reputation.
Looking back on Vanilla’s checkered past, it’s safe to assume that he’s quite the dare devil! Vanilla was arrested in Los Angeles in 1991 for illegal drag racing, and later that year, he reportedly pulled out a gun on a homeless man who was approaching his car. Then, in 2015, he was arrested for allegedly stealing furniture!
4. In the world of rap, Vanilla was an outsider for being white.
In the early 90’s, there weren’t many white rappers on the music scene. Vanilla, along with icons like The Beastie Boys, 3rd Bass, and House Of Pain, was one of the first white rappers to make a name for himself and extend his music to channels like MTV.
5. His music is still selling out concerts!
If you thought Vanilla’s music was a thing of the past, think again! Along with Coolio, Kid ‘N Play, and Salt-N-Pepa, Vanilla headlined the I Love 90’s tour that kicked off in Apr. 2016 and ran through Oct. Vanilla and the gang performed in almost every state across the U.S.
