I’ll be honest — I wanted to write this calling out the front runners of season 23 — but this season of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ just has too many. While some were better than others on night one, there are many with the potential to win it all!
First up, I have to bring up the obvious leader, Laurie Hernandez. The 16-year-old Olympian tied for the highest score of the night after dancing the Cha Cha with Val Chmerkovskiy, and she deserved it. The 31 out of 40 was well earned, as she was the last to take the stage at night, but showed that she’s been working endlessly to get the moves down. Her footwork was beyond impressive. However, we had a feeling she’d be good — but for some others, it was quite the surprise.
That brings me to Vanilla Ice. At 48, the singer brought back “Ice Ice Baby,” and this time mixed in a Cha Cha. Witney Carson definitely knows how to teach him because he admitted he didn’t know how to dance at all ahead of the show — he also didn’t know what the mirrorball trophy was since he’d never seen the show. Granted, he was a fast learner and a fast dancer. I have a feeling that each week as he grows more comfortable with the moves, he will rise to the top. He could absolutely be a contender for the finals.
My next notable mention goes to James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess who tied fro first after their Foxtrot. I’ll be honest, I knew nothing about the race car driver and now I know that he can definitely move. I think they shocked everyone with their chemistry and his incredible footwork. I think he could be a front runner that sneaks up from behind later in the season.
I have to bring attention to one of my favorite country singers, Jana Kramer. I mean, the chemistry she has with Gleb Savchenko is palpable, but she’s also very smooth on her feet and clearly a fast learner. She told him in the beginning she couldn’t really dance… but that doesn’t seem to be true! Not only was it sexy and passionate, but she was confident which is always half the battle.
Last but not lease, Marilu Renner is of course going to go far in this competition. Clearly she has the dance background, and she’s stayed in shape over the years, but it has to be tough to get those steps down and with Derek Hough as her coach, it’s definitely working!
Overall, this season is filled with frontrunners — even Ryan Lochte, who has been through a ton and was clearly nervous about letting people down, stayed smiling and really put in the work to do a great dance.
