Music fans around the world were devastated when Tupac Shakur was taken off life support on Sept. 13, 1996, after shockingly being shot days before. His legacy has lived on in the 20 years since his death, and fans took to social media to remember the legendary rapper on the bittersweet anniversary.
Considered one of the best rappers of his time and of all time, Tupac had a worldwide impact that has influenced the genre and the music industry since the day he stepped on the scene. His untimely death took the then 26-year-old superstar from the world far too soon, and as every year passes without Tupac fans remind later generations just how special he was.
“20 years ago we lost an icon way too soon. Tupac Shakur will forever live on through his music and those who embody his revolutionary spirit. The true definition and embodiment of Thug Life,” one fan wrote on Instagram. “He will always be remembered. Poet, Activist, Rapper and Actor he was so beyond his years. R.I.P. Tupac Shakur,” another chimed in on Twitter. See more of the tributes below:

Just two weeks before the anniversary of Tupac’s death, a supposed selfie of the rapper surfaced that had fans going crazy that he may actually still be alive. Since his murder, Tupac’s fans speculated that he never passed away and has been living a secret life. But a former police officer who was on the scene during Tupac’s shooting quickly shot that speculation down and confirmed that Tupac is in fact dead. One thing fans have made very clear, though, is that Tupac’s legacy will never die!
