Derek Hough was not having it when Ryan Lochte protesters rushed the stage during the season premiere of ‘Dancing With The Stars.’ In fact, he was so upset he took it upon himself to make sure things got handled. Read on to find out how he feels about people messing with his ‘home.’
Derek Hough, 31, became a hero on the season 23 premiere of Dancing With The Stars when he defended Ryan Lochte after he was attacked by protesters. The show was forced to cut to an unplanned commercial break after two men rushed the stage following the Olympic swimmer and Cheryl Burke‘s performance. The protesters, who both donned shirts with Lochte written on them in a circle with a line through his name, were taken away by security during the break, after Derek ran over, yelling, “get them out of here.” Way to go Derek!
“This is my home and I was just so shocked that people would come here and be so negative,” Derek told PEOPLE. “This is a safe place for people to learn a new skill and seek redemption or start a new chapter in their life and that’s what Ryan is trying to do and I just felt so defensive that someone would try and ruin that for him and for everyone watching, so I took it upon myself to make sure they were escorted out. I wanted to protect my home.”
We find it so sweet that Derek feels so protective over the show, and totally understand why he would have been so outraged by the behavior of the protesters. We can only imagine how scared everyone on set must have felt during the incident, and Derek’s ability to keep his cool is something to be admired.
