NY Giants players Odell Beckham Jr. and Victor Cruz defied the NFL’s strict uniform rules and wore special patriotic cleats during their opening season game on September 11. Despite threats that they could be fined for their commemorative gear, they took the risk. Click through to see their cleats!
The New York Giants game against the Dallas Cowboys on the opening day of the NFL season was especially poignant because it fell on the 15th anniversary of September 11. Giants wide receivers Odell Beckham, Jr. and Victor Cruz honored the lost lives and the brave first responders in their own way: colorful, patriotic cleats. They were playing that game for them!
However, the NFL has strict rules against deviating from sanctioned uniforms. If players don’t wear the NFL’s regulation white cleats, then they’ll be fined a hefty $6076 (for a first time offense). But the players ignored that possibility and went through with their touching tribute. Odell wore two pairs of patriotic cleats: a pair depicting the Twin Towers during the pre-game, and and a pair with the American flag and an eagle’s bust for the actual game.

Victor wore a pair emblazoned with the Star-Spangled Banner during the game, and a particularly special game for practice. Victor’s father was a longtime firefighter in Paterson, NJ, who responded to Ground Zero; he died in 2007. His cleats looked like the side of an FDNY firetruck, complete with his number: 9.
“It’s always a heavy-hearted day,” Victor told the Giants.com. “You think about that moment where you were on that day, thinking about the emotions that went through your body that day. You relived those moments. It’s one of those days you remember forever, and one of those days now that you want to honor those first responders and those firemen and those police officers that were there and just cherish the moment, because you know that at the drop of a dime, something like that could happen.”
The special cleats were designed by Kickasso like Picasso, and owner Troy Cole spoke to why Odell was wearing the cleats: “It’s a special cleat for a couple reasons. I mean opening day is on 9/11,” Troy said. “And Odell wanted to pay tribute to the heroes of 9/11, and not toward the tragedy aspect.”
