Add Chris Brown to the list of celebrities who’ve opted not to stand during the National Anthem. The singer stayed seated during the song at a charity basketball game, refusing to honor the brave men and women who died for our country…even on 9/11. Watch here.
Despite the notable date of September 11, Chris Brown, 27, refused to stand while the National Anthem was sung at the charity basketball game he was playing in. Instead, he stayed seated on the hardwood floor, despite urgings from Tank, who was performing.
“I understand everyone exercises their right to stand or sit and exercise their right to freedom and justice, but in the wake of 9/11, please understand and respect the fact that real men and women and children lost their lives for this very thing that we’re able to stand for today,” Tank explained. “For this very place that we’re in, for this interaction, for this moment.”
Chris was seen smiling and nodding in approval throughout the performance, but remained sitting down the entire time. The 27-year-old didn’t explain why he decided not to stand, but it seems like he’s following in Colin Kaepernick’s footsteps. The 49ers QB has been kneeling during the National Anthem because he doesn’t want to “stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”
Several other sports stars, including players on teams like the Miami Dolphins, Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, have taken Colin’s lead as the season has begun heating up. Meanwhile, although Chris seemed carefree during the basketball game on 9/11, he has a court date coming up in just over a week, on Sept. 20, where he’ll respond to the charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
HollywoodLifers, what do you think of Chris protesting the National Anthem? Are you shocked he stayed seated?
