Whoops! Betty Cantrell, Miss America 2016 totally slipped up in the final moments of the 2017 pageant when putting the sash on the new winner, Savvy Shields! She not only put it on backward — she swore. Watch it below.
Even Betty Cantrell couldn’t compose her excitement during the Sept. 11 ceremony, live from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey! She totally screamed out “oh sh-t,” when she accidentally put the sash on Savvy Shields, Miss Arkansas, backward.
We have to say, Savvy, 21, was such a good sport and laughed and cried through the moment!
The pageant this year was hosted by Chris Harrison and Sage Steele, and the judges panel consisted of Gabby Douglas, Laura Marano, Cole Swindell, Sara Foster, Ciara, and former Miss America Sharlene Wells Hawkes.
Of course, Betty has had an amazing reign during her time, and recently admitted that she hasn’t had it that easy either.
“Miss America is a glamorous role, yes, but behind the scenes it is… not so glamorous. I don’t think I truly become ‘Betty, Miss America’ until I get to the event and the crown goes onto my head. I thought I never wanted to take it off, but now sometimes it’s just like, ‘Ugh, do I have to wear the crown?,'” she told Cosmopolitan. “And I hate to say, I hate to say that. I’ve worked so hard for this crown, I should just want to wear it all the time, as much as I can, because it’s just one year I get to wear it and I’m not allowed to wear it ever again.”
She also added that it was time to pass the crown — but yes, “it’s definitely bittersweet.”
“I’ve made a lot of connections in Nashville because I want to be a singer, and I’ll be moving there in November or December, hopefully, to pursue my country music career,” she added. “I’m ready to kind of move on with my life as Betty. It’s definitely bittersweet, but yes, I’m ready to just crown the new girl and let her put her mark on the Miss America organization.”
