Sir John doesn’t share makeup tips often thanks to the top secret projects (like Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’ video) that are a regular part of his job. But ahead of his New York Fashion Week pop-up event, Sir John Beauty Gallery, the makeup pro gave us the inside scoop behind some of his most photographed looks. Get the details on how to attend his gallery and his number one tip, ahead!
Have a favorite makeup look from Beyoncé? Nine times out of 10, you have Sir John to thank for it. The makeup artist is not only Bey’s go-to guy for her live shows, music videos and red carpet events, but he also works with other glam girls like Margot Robbie and It models Joan Smalls, Jourdan Dunn and Karlie Kloss. To celebrate his work and help other aspiring artists and beauty junkies at the same time, Sir John will host his own master class and discussion panel on Sept. 14 in NYC.
We spoke to the artist and L’Oréal Paris Celebrity Makeup Artist ahead of his Sir John Beauty Gallery opening for all the details on what attendees can expect and what readers at home can adapt to their own routines.
“No one is a makeup beginner anymore,” Sir John tells HollywoodLife. “Everyone has so much information with social media so I wanted to show people how to open up their knowledge and just jump into the conversation,” he explained of his master class event. After attendees play in the gallery’s photo booth and virtual makeup mirrors, Sir John will host a master class, teaching a yet-to-be-decided look from his many memorable moments.
Known for his ability to create flawless skin with a statement look (remember Joan’s violet lip at the 2014 MET Gala?), Sir John advises, “If you’re not able to perfect anything else, perfect your skin.” To do that, he says it’s important to concentrate on taking care of your skin through your diet as much as the products you put on it. “The goal is to take care of your skin so you don’t need a ton of foundation, then just give maximum coverage as needed,” Sir John explains. “Color match [your] foundation, if you have oily skin use matte products,” he adds. “It’s all about finding what works for you.”
And if you’re looking for a cool trend to rock this fall, Sir John says “plums are going to be really big.” Inspired by the pops of plum on eyes and lips that he saw girls wearing during a recent trip to Europe, Sir John created the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche La Palette Lip in Plum, $16.99, so anyone can perfect the color on their lips. Curated with eight shades in matte, cream and sheer finishes, Sir John also designed everyday pink and nude versions of the palettes, too.
