Ryan Lochte, 32, is determined to turn his reputation back around again. In a new interview with Ellen DeGeneres, the gold medal winning swimmer revealed that he will be competing in Tokyo 2020. During the interview, Ryan also shared that he felt “mentally tired” of swimming, but that he hopes his 10-month suspension and time on Dancing With The Stars will be the break he needed.
“Yes, I definitely want to, but you know the past year I was mentally tired of the sport because I’ve been doing it so long,” Ryan explained. “Now that the suspension and everything has happened I can take that mental break, but I still have goals that I want to accomplish so I will definitely be back and hopefully I’ll be ready to rock and roll.”
This is really exciting news for fans and supporters of Ryan, as there was a lot of speculation that might not compete in the next Olympics following the scandal that unfolded while he was in Rio, Brazil for the 2016 games. After Ryan was caught lying about being robbed at gunpoint while out on the town with three other swimmers it seemed the whole world had turned on him, but now he’s trying to win them over again.
Ryan will appear on the 23rd season of Dancing With The Stars alongside his partner, Cheryl Burke, when the show premieres on Monday, September 12. It will definitely be interested to see if he’s got the moves to win that disco ball trophy!
