After her face became disfigured due to a horrific attack in which her own brother-in-law held her down and poured acid on her face, the stunning Reshma Qureshi bravely walked the catwalk during a show at New York Fashion Week.
“I feel I’m doing this for the acid attack survivors that there are and to give them confidence. I’m very excited to have this opportunity,” Reshma, 19, said in an interview after her runway debut. “People have the tendency to look at acid attack survivors from one perspective and I don’t want them to look at them like that anymore.” Aw.
Reshma wore a cream floor-length gown for her debut on Thursday, September 8, that was designed by Archana Kochhar. She lives in Mumbai, India, but was flown in to New York specifically for the exciting event where she put her acid attack scars on display for the world to see. “I feel really good and the experience was great,” she told The Guardian after strutting down the catwalk. “I feel as though it has definitely changed my life.”
Hopefully this is not the last time we get to see Reshma in the fashion world. The model has made a name for herself on YouTube where she occasionally appears in videos to provide style and makeup tips to those who have suffered attacks like her own. “Why should we not enjoy our lives? What happened to us is not our fault and we’ve done nothing wrong and so we should also move forward in life,” Reshma shared, adding that she feels very “brave” for her decision to bring awareness to the horrific attack she and at least 500 to 1000 women endure every single year.
