There are no words for the horrific tragedy MMA fighter Marcus Kowal & GF Mishel Eder are suffering through after losing their baby, Liam, at 15 months old. And while in a recent interview the heartbroken couple said they’re completely ‘broken,’ in honor of Liam, they’ve pledged to fight against the drunk driving that killed him. Watch their emotional plea here.
“That’s what he would have wanted,” Marcus Kowal, 39, told CNN during an interview on Sept. 9 when asked how he and Liam’s mom, Mishel Eder, are able to function after the death of their baby son on Sept. 3. “He was such a joyful little child.” And now, in memory of their happy boy, Marcus and Mishel are dedicating their lives to educating others about the dangers of drunk driving — and that is what truly has been motivating them to get out of bed every day.

“We want to make sure that, one: if we can stop one single person from getting behind the wheel and driving drunk, and if that can save one life, then his life and death wasn’t in vain,” Marcus said. “But we plan on going much further than that — we don’t want to save just one life. It’s a thing that has to change in this country.”
As Marcus spoke, a devastated-looking Mishel sat next to him, looking as if she was about to burst into tears at any moment — and understandably so. “I’m breaking, I’m unraveling,” the heartbroken mother said. “…Our baby is gone because of a reckless act that somebody did. She was drunk at 4:15 in the afternoon.” And by “she,” Mishel means Donna Marie Higgins, 72, who struck Liam and his 15-year-old aunt with her car as they were within a crosswalk on Sept. 3.
“[Donna] has had her life to live, our son had so little time,” Mishel continued as she choked back tears. “This not only affected him, this affected our entire community. The damages are everlasting.” We could not agree more. In order to keep Liam’s memory alive, Mishel and Marcus donated his healthy organs — his heart, kidneys, and lungs — because Liam “loved to share.”
“If he can’t use his body, if he’s gone, we can at least save somebody else,” Mishel explained. Speaking about Liam’s legacy, Marcus explained that while some said the little boy would grow up to be a great fighter like his dad, the athlete and his partner just wanted him to be a good person — someone who “cares.”
“He’s showing that he cares by donating his organs,” Marcus said. “We set up a nonprofit from the donations we’ve been receiving to continue the fight against drunk driving in this country — there’s no excuse for drinking and driving; you don’t have to do it.”
Our thoughts are with Marcus and Mishel during this extremely difficult time. HollywoodLifers, please leave your condolences for the heartbroken couple below.
