Vons grocery store has responded after Zendaya claimed on Snpachat that she was refused service over the color of her skin, adding that the clerk threw her wallet back at her when she tried purchasing gift cards!
“At Vons, we strive to treat each and every customer with the utmost respect. There is a policy that limits gift card purchases using a credit card,” the manager said in a statement to People following Zendaya‘s claims that an employee refused to serve her because of her skin tone.
“Zendaya was able to purchase gift cards up to our limit, and we apologize for any inconvenience or misunderstanding,” the statement continued. “We respect Zendaya’s voice in the community and similarly are committed to diversity and inclusion. Moreover, we understand that race is a sensitive issue in America and view this experience as a reminder that every interaction is an opportunity to treat each customer as we ourselves would like to be treated.”
Of course, this comes after Zendaya took to Snapchat on Sept. 6, claiming the woman at Vons was not “a huge fan of our skin tone,” adding that the employee threw her wallet at her when she tried buying $400 in gift cards. “This is what we deal with…” Zendaya said, with her male friend joining in to add, “Because we’re black.”
“I can’t make this up! This is what we deal with! She literally threw my wallet and she was like ‘You can’t afford this.’ It was $400,” Zendaya said on her snap. “Long story short. There is so much progress to be done in our world. It wasn’t like a throw, it was like a toss with my cards still loose . . . my card fell on the scanner and she began helping other customers. You know what, it’s all love!”
Zendaya did end up getting help in the end. “Yo shout out the manager for coming and helping – I got my gift cards,” she said.
So, do you think the apology is enough?
