When Serena walked off the court, having defeated Yaroslava Shvedova, 28, in two straight sets (6-2, 6-3) on Sept. 5, she had notched her name once again in the history books, per CNN. With that win, Serena had secured her 308th grand slam tournament victory, moving her past Roger Federer, 35, for the top spot. It’s official: Serena is the most dominant tennis athlete of all time!
Just because Serena has set the record, don’t think she’s done. She still has one more record to shatter. After securing the win at Wimbledon, Serena tied with Steffi Graf, 47, for 22 Grand Slam titles – but she’s still 2 away from the record held by Margaret Court, 74. Though Serena won’t surpass the tennis legend, winning her 23rd Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open would take her one step closer to that milestone.
However, she hast to get by Simona. The Romanian has put up 87% of her returns during the first four rounds of the tournament, per Sports Illustrated, pulling an impressive 68% return rate on aggressive shots. Considering that Serena has yet to lose serve in the tournament and is considered the best server in women’s tennis, this will be an epic matchup. If Serena doesn’t bring her A-Game, it might be a case of history repeating as she could wind up eliminated, just like she was in 2015.
Who do you think will win this match, HollywoodLifers? Are you standing by Serena or are you cheering on Simona?
