Well, Ryan Lochte just got his punishment for his Rio gas station situation, and the U.S. Olympic Committee was pretty tough on him, according to a new report. To find out what his punishment is, as well as all the details behind their decision, keep reading!
Ryan Lochte was reportedly suspended for 10 months, according to TMZ, which is a harsher punishment than Michael Phelps‘ six-month suspension was, and that was for 2 DUIs. TMZ states the punishment was handed down to Ryan by not only the U.S. Olympic Committee, but the International Olympic Committee, and USA Swimming.
Interestingly, some people in the USOC felt Ryan’s punishment was too severe, according to TMZ, considering Michael actually put people’s lives at risk, while Ryan “didn’t lie about a material fact.”
The other three swimmers involved in the Rio scandal were also suspended, but for less time.
As you’ll recall, Ryan and his teammates — Jack Conger, Jimmy Feigen, and Gunnar Bentz — initially claimed they were “robbed” at a gas station after a night out on Aug. 13. But Ryan’s version of the story ended up having several different variations, when speaking to authorities. After some investigating, authorities discovered that Ryan and his teammates were not robbed. Instead, they just vandalized a gas station bathroom, and when security tried to hold them there until police arrived, the swimmers gave them money and left. Ryan has since taken “full responsibility” for his actions and revealed that his story was “exaggerated.“
It’s sad that he was suspended for so long, but we do think it’s fair that he’s being punished. And he certainly has a lot to keep him busy over the next 10 months, including a stint on the upcoming season of Dancing With the Stars!
