It was a shock to everyone when Patrick Dempsey’s beloved Derek Shepherd was killed off ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ but the actor reveals in an all-new interview that he wishes he’d left the show sooner than season 11! Seriously?!
“There were a lot of things coming to a head,” he told PEOPLE of the decision to kill off Derek Shepherd. “After a certain period of time, no matter how much money you make, you want control over your own schedule. And I was definitely ready to move on. We were both ready. I stayed a bit longer than I should have.”
Patrick was on Grey’s Anatomy from its pilot until season 11. His character was killed in a car accident in one of the show’s most shocking scenes ever. Grey’s Anatomy has a knack for killing off cherished characters — like George, Lexi and Mark — but Derek’s death took everyone by surprise.
If Patrick thinks he should have exited before season 11, when does he think he should have left the show? That’s a question we need answered right away. The shooting episodes in season 6 could have been an out for Patrick. Derek was left fighting for his life after being shot in the chest by an angry loved one of a former patient.
Thankfully, Patrick and Derek stayed with us for over decade. The show still isn’t the same without him — he’ll always be McDreamy! However, Grey’s Anatomy remains one of the best shows on television. There’s just something so addictive about the soapy medical drama.
Patrick revealed in an recent interview with Cosmopolitan UK that his favorite episode of the show is the pilot. That’s the episode that started it all! Grey’s Anatomy season 13 will premiere Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
