Zayn Malik canceled his Dubai concert due to a bout of crippling anxiety, which caused a panic attack. Severe anxiety is much more common than you may think — Zayn isn’t alone in his struggle! Click through to learn all about panic attacks, and what Zayn’s going through right now!
1. Panic attacks have horrible, severe physical symptoms
Here are the signals that you may be having a panic attack: palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate, sweating, trembling or shaking, shortness of breath, feeling like you’re being smothered, feeling like you’re chocking, chest pain, nausea, feeling dizzy or faint, chills or heat, numbness/tingling
2. Panic attacks also have disturbing psychological symptoms
Along with the above, someone having a panic attack could also experience some terrifying, unreal issues. These include derealization, which means the “feeling of unreality. A person could also experience depersonalization, the feeling of being detached from themselves. They may fear that they’re going crazy or dying.
3. They can happen anytime, anywhere
For some people, a panic attack doesn’t just happen when they’re in high anxiety situations. An episode can just happen out of the blue, even when they’re relaxed or asleep! However, some, like Zayn Malik, can have episodes triggered by a specific situation — like performing in front of a large audience. A lot of people worry about having another panic attack, and fear being in the situation again that gave them the attack in the first place
4. It can be treated by several methods
If you’re suffering from panic attacks, there’s hope. Panic attacks can be treated with antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. There’s also cognitive behavioral therapy — focusing on the thinking patterns that trigger the attacks. Or, there’s exposure therapy, which is exactly what it sounds like.
5. There are self-help ways to deal with it, too
Practice breathing techniques, avoid smoking and caffeine, and learn how to control your breathing so you don’t hyperventilate! You’ve got this, and so does Zayn!
