This is so sad! The world’s first face transplant patient, Isabelle Dinoire, has tragically passed away on Sept. 6. Though there’s no official cause yet, the 49-year-old’s ‘long illness’ can be linked back to her many surgeries and treatments related to the transplant. We have all the tragic details.
What a tragic story. Isabelle Dinoire was a medical miracle as the first person to ever have a successful face transplant, but sadly 11 years after the groundbreaking surgery, the 49-year-old patient has passed away on Sept. 6.
Though a statement released by Amiens Hospital says that Isabelle died “following a long illness,” French newspaper Le Figaro says that she had finally succumbed after battling complications with her most recent surgery to repair her face. After 11 years with her new face, her body began to reject it. Isabelle lost the ability to use her lips last winter, and the intense medications she was on to avoid this kind of rejection actually cause two types of cancer. So sad!
However, the tragic end to Isabelle’s story doesn’t change the amazingness of her medical feat. In 2005, her dog attacked her and tore her face off of her body. Just lucky to survive, she was left horribly disfigured. In an attempt to save her livelihood, Amiens Hospital managed to give her a whole new face, which progressed over the years until she had full use of it as though it was her own. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Isabelle’s family, who have refused to put out an obituary to the public in order to maintain their privacy during this very difficult time.
