Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren is leaving the channel after fourteen years, giving up a prominent time slot in the heat of election season. Her exit comes on the heels of former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson’s multi-million dollar lawsuit against ex-CEO Roger Ailes — get all of the details here!
Greta Van Susteren, 62, has left Fox News Channel as of Sept. 6. A source tells our sister site Variety that her exit is attributed to “a financial disagreement”, and Fox News reports that Greta was in contract renegotiations following Roger Ailes‘ resignation. She “is one of a number of key Fox personnel whose contract included a ‘key man’ clause allowing her to leave if Ailes departed”, according to FOX News’ Howard Kurtz. “When those negotiations deadlocked, Van Susteren chose to invoke the departure option.”
Fox News co-presidents Jack Abernethy and Bill Shine said in an official statement that Greta’s departure from the network was not hostile. “We are grateful for Greta’s many contributions over the years and wish her continued success,” they said.
Anchor Brit Hume, 73, will take over her prominent 7:00 PM slot. “I am happy to take on this assignment for the balance of this extraordinary election. My FOX News colleagues have set a high standard for political coverage which I’ll do my best to uphold. I’m honored to be asked,” he said in a statement.
Greta’s departure has coincided with Gretchen Carlson‘s settling with the network for a $20 million win. The journalist was awarded the amount two months after she filed her bombshell sexual harassment lawsuit against the now former CEO of Fox News, and her actions set things in motion as other female Fox employees came forward with similar claims. Interestingly, Greta actually rose to Ailes’ defense, writing on her blog Gretawire that she “did not know about any sexual harassment” and/or “keep it secret”.
