Donald Glover returns to TV in FX’s new comedy ‘Atlanta.’ Donald puts his heart and soul into the show as its creator, writer, star — and his effort pays off in spades. ‘Atlanta’ is one of TV’s most creative new shows that you need to be watching.
Donald Glover, 32, stars Earn Marks, a struggling college dropout trying to make it in the music business, and just life in general. Earn certainly has goals, he’s just had trouble getting up enough ambition to make them happen. But when he sees the potential (and potential paper) in his cousin, rapper Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles, he knows he has to act now.
Atlanta is yet another show following the music industry, but its fresh take makes it a standout. The show may seem slow at times, but that’s in part due to the carefree nature of a place like Atlanta and the normal pace of everyday life. Unlike Empire, Atlanta is never moving at full speed. The pace works for a show like Atlanta and leaves you wanting more.
Donald’s performance is exactly what you would expect out of the writer/actor extraordinaire. He’s laid-back and subtle, but you can feel the intensity in his eyes. Donald’s Earn pairs very well with Alfred (Brian Tyree Henry) and his quirky roommate Darius (Lakeith Stanfield).
The show places these characters in very real and dangerous situations, but manages to get a laugh or two in while they’re at it. Atlanta seems to be building itself up to be a rags to riches story and really hones in on what it means to be young and black in America right now. This trio may be hit with societal obstacles, but they’ve got more than enough oomph and talent to make big things happen for them. Atlanta airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
