M.I.A. called up Zayn Malik to collaborate on the track ‘Freedun’ off her album ‘AIM’, and we are SO glad she did. The song was finally released today, Sept. 1, and it’s incredible. LISTEN right here!
Rapper M.I.A., 41, and Zayn Malik, 23, are a match made in music heaven, as we can hear on “Freedun.” While M.I.A. does her rapping thing on the track’s verses, Zayn adds his smooth vocals on the chorus. Zayn’s part of the song is haunting, as his voice is mixed with some hypnotic sounds while M.I.A. sings “free, da da dun, free, da dun.” Talk about a catchy hook!
M.I.A. premiered the track on BBC radio as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record In The World (and it might just end up being that!) on Sept. 1. Listen to “Freedun” above!
Get this: M.I.A. revealed that she and Zayn wrote the song together over WhatsApp! “We just basically did it while I was [in India], because I’ve been here for a week-and-a-half. We’ve just been going back and forth on, you know, WhatsApp,” she told Entertainment Weekly in an interview. Ah, technology.
The rapper added that she’s been wanting to work for Zayn for a while now. “We have the same publishers and they wanted me to demo some songs for Zayn,” she told the mag, referring to the time when she considered writing songs for his album Mind of Mine. “Before I started writing properly my own stuff [for AIM], I was thinking maybe I’ll write for other people instead. I really wanted to write a song for Zayn….We had a couple people in common. And that’s how it came about. I didn’t really approach him for my own record until later on. First, I thought I wanted to try writing a song for him.” Well, it certainly worked out!
AIM is out Sept. 9, so be sure to get your hands on a copy. “I want to do something else for a bit,” M.I.A. said about the record. “I just feel like I need to spend more periods of time somewhere. When you get into music and you get into a cycle of a record, how life goes, is very fast. You don’t get to just live things out and get involved with communities. I want to spend some time in Greece, make a documentary [there]. Something useful for a bit.” In the meantime, though, she’s giving the fans what they crave in the form of dope songs like “Freedun.”
