Colton, 28, immediately started tearing up when he walked up on stage. It was an emotional moment for him, and one he’ll never forget. “Wow! I’ve experienced a lot of wow moments in my life, but tonight may top them all,” Colton said, with tears welling up in his eyes. “Thank you for letting me feel your love. I hope you feel all of mine.”
He said he felt “lucky” to be a part of a “such a strong, fierce and united community that believes as I do that equality is our birth right, not a slogan.” The awards ceremony was one of the first times that Colton has talked about his journey as a gay man since coming out. While the former Teen Wolf star admitted that some people thought his public coming out was “splashy,” he didn’t feel that way about it at all.
“[Being in the entertainment industry] seems to make a bigger deal of everyone’s personal decisions,” he continued. “Every one of you already knows this, I never made a decision to be gay. That came just as naturally as the color of my eyes.”
He promised to the “next generations of lesbians and gay men, bisexuals, and transgender youth” that he would “give them the confidence and hope to be who they are too, and to conquer their own fears and hesitation. I want give them just a little more courage to know they are loved just as they are, and to know they will grow up beautiful and strong and proud.”
Colton later added on Instagram: “I don’t necessarily feel especially deserving of this recognition. We all know that there are many other ways, many other people who have come before me and blazed the trail as LGBT advocates and role models. And I’m walking in their shoes and I’m following their lead.”
