Does anyone have Jeff Goldblum’s contact info? We may have to go into battle, ‘Independence Day’-style! Astronomers have detected radio signals emanating off a sun star 95 lightyears away from Earth, and there’s speculation that it could be from aliens! Learn more about their experiments after the jump!
Get ready to get science’d! Astronomers in Russia detected a spike in radio signals from a star called HD 164595 in the Hercules constellation, back in May 2015. The Russian scientists declined to share their puzzling findings until now, and a team of International astronomers is now seeking answers over the strange signals.
The 2.7cm signals, detected by a RATAN-600 radio telescope in Zelenchukskaya, are thought to be the result of microlensing, a phenomenon caused by the sun star’s gravity strengthening, which pulls in signals from farther away. HD 164595 is thought to be 12 Kelvin hotter than our sun, and about 100 million years younger. It has at least one “warm Neptune” planet in it’s orbit, and possibly more undetected planets, as well.
While scientists aren’t saying this is aliens (we can delete the frantic texts to Mulder and Scully), astronomers have asked SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) to investigate the odd signals! SETI will be operating from the Allen Telescope Array in northern California and the Boquete Optical SETI Observatory in Panama on August 28, to see if they can find anything about potential alien communication.
“Working out the strength of the signal, the researchers say that if it came from an isotropic beacon, it would be of a power possible only for a Kardashev Type II civilization. If it were a narrow beam signal focused on our Solar System, it would be of a power available to a Kardashev Type I civilization,” according to Centauri Dreams.
Translated: the The Kardashev scale is a hypothetical system of measuring an alien civilization’s technological advancement. Both Kardashev Type I and Type II societies are far more advanced than the human race, so good luck to us!
