After a night like that, they’ll be talking about the 2016 MTV VMAs for years! From Beyonce serving ‘Lemonade’ to Britney Spears’s return to Rihanna performing four times in one night, the show was full of jaw-dropping, OMG-did-you-see-that moments. Click to see all the highlights!
The biggest night in music videos was already in a New York State of mind as the event took place from the world-famous Madison Square Garden on Aug. 28. With Britney Spears, 34, Ariana Grande, 23, Nicki Minaj, 33, and more scheduled to light up the stage, many wondered who would be the most talked about moment of the night.
What people found out was: Britney’s back! After an introduction from Kim Kardashian, 35, she made her triumphant return to the VMAs. Brit and G-Eazy, 27, teamed up for a wild and sparkly rendition of her new single, “Make Me.”
Before Brit hit the stage, it was Beyonce‘s, 34, turn at the spotlight. And boy, did she take it! After pulling a surprise performance of “Freedom” at the BETs, Queen Bey treated everyone to a whole lot of “Lemonade,” busting out an epic performance from the album that left everyone at MSG on their feet!
Britney may have been back at the VMAs but she wasn’t alone. Nicki and Ariana delivered a killer version of their song “Side to Side.” The Chainsmokers and Halsey, 21, turned up the heat with their hit, “Closer.” Before that, Nick Jonas, 23, always an award show highlight, brought home the “Bacon,” with some help from Ty Dolla $ign, 31.
Don’t forget about Kanye West, 39. Remember, he turned the 2015 VMAs on its head by declaring his 2020 presidential campaign during his Michael Jackson Video Vanguard acceptance speech. Could Yeezy cause another historic VMA moment? Well, after he went on another bizarre rant, Yeezy premiered the video for his song, “Fade,” which had a naked Teyana Taylor turn into a lion!
Speaking of the MTV Video Vanguard award, the 2016 recipient, Rihanna, 28, was the definition of “slay.” She kicked off the show with a medley of some of her hits, but then it was revealed that she was going to perform three more times! That has to be a MTV VMA record! It was almost as amazing and when Drake, 29, came out to give her the Vanguard away — and a kiss!
Of course, the night wasn’t all performances – they had to give out some awards! Bey took home Best Female Video while Calvin Harris won the award for Best Male Video. For the main event, it was a battle royale of the biggest names in music. Adele, 28 (“Hello”) Justin Bieber, 22 (“Sorry) Drake, 29 (“Hotline Bling”) Kanye West (“Famous”) and Queen Bey (“Formation”) were all up for Video Of The Year but no one could beat Bey. She walked away with the Moonman for “Formation.” Slay!
