On the latest episode of ‘Fear The Walking Dead,’ Madison has trouble letting go of Nick and Travis after they left her behind. Plus, Nick finds out that the community he’s found refuge in has some dark secrets of it’s own.
As this episode begins, Nick wakes up in one of the makeshift hospital beds in the new community that he’s been welcomed into. Next to him is a woman who appears to be gravely ill, not only because she’s feverish and coughing but also because of all the blood in her bed. Nick doesn’t sit around to find out what’s wrong with her and instead ventures outside to find the entire community is vacant — not a single soul in sight. He uses this opportunity to do a little exploring, and eventually he comes upon a little girl crying for her “papa.” That’s when Nick looks up and realizes that right in front of him the entire community is basically feeding one of their own to a large group of walkers that have been gated into one specific area. WTF?
After the break we finally meet up with Madison, Alicia, Victor, and Ofelia. They are still on the road, and we find out quickly that they’ve been searching for Nick, Travis, and Chris for two days. Madison is desperate to find them, but Victor and Alicia finally convince her they need to go back to the Abigail where it’s safe — and they have supplies.
Unfortunately for the group, the Abigail is nowhere to be found. Madison is devastated, but not because the boat is gone — because now Nick won’t know where to find them. To appease Madison, Alicia uses some washed up wood to leave a note for Nick telling him to head north. The group then heads to a hotel they see on the beach in the distance, and even though it seems like a terrible idea (of course) they plan to go inside and find shelter.
Victor busts open the door and makes sure to make a ton of noise on his way in, creeping through the lobby slowly to see if anything came running for them. He’s lucky when nothing shows up, but Madison brings up a good point: someone “locked” the place “down” from the inside. Victor rings the bell a few times just to be extra sure, and then the group makes their way further into the resort.
In the banquet room they find the remains of a wedding gone wrong, so wrong that the cake is completely untouched. It’s a depressing sight and a real reminder of how quickly things must have escalated as more and more people got sick without warning.
Nick Gets To Know The Local Gangs
Meanwhile, back in Nick’s newfound home, he’s asked to help treat some of the injured. It’s unclear if they’ve been bit or are just hurt from trying to survive, but since Nick doesn’t speak Spanish he can’t understand most of what everyone around him is saying. For instance, the old man with the nasty wound on his leg tells the doctor — who we find out is only a pharmacist — that he’s “leaving soon” so they should probably save their medicine. Is he going to get fed to the walkers, too?
Nick doesn’t get to help with the injured for long, because Luciana comes looking for him while he’s trying to clean bandages. She takes him to the same place we saw the group feeding an innocent man to the walkers before, but uses Nick’s trick of covering herself in walker blood to get through the crowd. She tells him he’s not allowed to talk to her, and to put his “makeup” on. Before he’s no longer allowed to talk Nick asks her, “Why me?” To which Luciana tells him no one will miss him — but that the person who will miss her is already missing. Hmm.
Even though he’s not supposed to talk, once they are outside the community Nick asks Luciana about the bizarre ritual he witnessed that morning. She explains that those who are “near dead” deliver themselves to the dead, joining them on the other side. “The dead, they are returning… and when they go this world will be as new,” Luciana tells him, sounding a lot like Celia. Nick sounds skeptical of what she’s saying which is surprising since he was so “Team Celia” before the compound burnt to the ground with her inside. Then Luciana drops a bombshell: the pharmacist that has been treating him was “bit” by a walker. Nick is quick to call bull and understandably so, but Luciana says she witnessed it with her own eyes — and he survived. It’s an insane story, but if it’s true what does it mean?
Luciana takes Nick into East Tijuana where a large gang is holding the area down, completely free of walkers. She explains that they are dealing everything now, including food and water, which is what they came for. Luciana offers a bag of medicine to one of the gang members in return for water, to which he obliges. He gives Luciana one shopping cart and tells her she can take whatever fits in the cart. When he lets her inside the building, it is another sure sign of the apocalypse — a grocery store in total ruins.
As they are walking through the “store” Nick discovers that a large part of the building is a shelter where many survivors are living in tents and sleeping bags. The gang member they spoke to outside seems to be comforting a woman who doesn’t look very good, but when he catches Nick watching he seems a little annoyed. When they leave everything seems okay… until a man comes running out of the building, whispers to the leader, and then they run and throw Nick on the ground. They find the snack he picked up in the store shoved in the back of his pants, and then pistol whip him in the back of the head. Ouch.
Nick’s punishment for stealing is getting his hand chopped off, but before they go for the slice he asks Luciana to translate for him. He tells him that if he hurts him they won’t bring him any more medicine, meaning the woman inside — who is apparently the leader’s sister — will die. Nick continues to tell them that they are going through their supply way too fast, and if they decide to go to another gang for things like water that they will get cut off from the medicine. The man is pretty pissed about this, but eventually he lightens up — and even agrees to give them one more cart of water when Nick demands it. Who knew he could be such a good negotiator?
Ofelia Reveals She’s Lost All Hope
Back at the resort Alicia and Ofelia have gone off on their own to search the hotel rooms while Madison and Victor find themselves drinking martinis at the empty hotel bar. Not exactly a great survival tactic, but to be fair they do deserve a little downtime — especially Madison. With one drink she lets her southern accent slip, and Victor pries into her background a bit for more information. Madison finally reveals she’s from Alabama, the answer to a question many fans have been wondering in hopes we would find out she was somehow related to one of the survivors on The Walking Dead. Although she’s not from Georgia as many expected, I feel the need to point out that the states are directly next to each other — so the theory she’s connected to someone else still isn’t very far fetched.
Upstairs Ofelia and Alicia find a maid cart with a universal key, but they quickly learn that most of the rooms have walkers trapped inside. It doesn’t take them long to notice that each room has been marked with the do not disturb signs, the red signs indicating which rooms have walkers in them. One of the green rooms turns out to have a walker inside, but it’s a man who hung himself in the shower so he’s still attached to shower head. It throws both Alicia and Ofelia for a loop, and seems to haunt them as they make their way through the rest of the rooms. When Alicia brings up the man’s decision to give up, Ofelia caves and reveals that she doesn’t think they are going to make it. Alicia refuses to believe it though, and she even tries to convince Ofelia that there’s still hope to be had.
Things in the bar get a little crazy when Madison and Victor switch to tequila, and she opens up about how she knows she’s never going to see Nick again. She starts revealing more details about their past, how Nick has his father’s darkness, and how the car accident he died in didn’t happen the way she told the kids it did. She told them he fell asleep, but by her tone it sounds as if something else happened — that he either did it intentionally, or that he was intoxicated. It’s a heartbreaking confession, and when she stands up and nearly falls over that’s when Victor realizes she’s wasted. Madison takes two more shots and throws both glasses against the wall, which is when Victor finally takes the bottle away from her. He tries to soothe her by playing the piano in the bar, but it’s incredibly out of tune.
Madison & Victor Have A Drunk Death Wish
The loud piano music and the breaking glass seem to upset a group of walkers trapped in a store across the street, and slowly by surely they break through the glass doors and escape towards the sounds. As this is happening Alicia gets out of the shower in the room she and Ofelia found, but her friend seems to have disappeared. Even worse? A body flies by the balcony and scares the daylights out of Alicia, though she still goes outside to see what is going on. All across the resort walkers are falling off of balconies and getting back up, which immediately alerts Alicia to her mom being in danger on the ground floor. Alicia makes a run for it down the hallway to the stairwell, but when she opens the door it’s filled with walkers. She struggles to get the door closed, but eventually gets it done — and Ofelia is still missing.
Eventually the walkers find their way to the bar and a horde quickly takes over, cornering drunk Madison and Victor inside the bar against the wall. They use everything they can to fend off the walkers — chairs, bottles, glasses, but they are still overwhelmed and completely trapped. Not good.
Nick and Luciana make it back to their community without being followed by gang members, which was a concern she had after Nick’s stunt. Luciana goes to get Alejandro, the pharmacist and apparently the leader, but when she returns to get Nick she finds him giving the cake he stole to the little girl whose father died earlier that day. It brings a tear to Luciana’s eye and also shows her a different side of Nick, but she pushes it aside to bring him to Alejandro. The man questions Nick’s motives for nearly getting them into a gang war, and Nick is very honest about how he wanted to make the little girl feel better about losing her father. Alejandro tells him there is no room for comfort in this world anymore, just survival for the “chosen” ones who are “faithful.” He tells Nick the same thing Luciana did, that the dead are leaving soon, and while doing so he accidentally reveals that a massive chunk of his shoulder is missing. That must be where he was bit, as Luciana said, though he doesn’t seem to want to share his own story with the class.
