The dramatic price increase for lifesaving EpiPens has caused many parents to fear for their children’s lives — and for good reason! HollywoodLife.com spoke EXCLUSIVELY to a doctor who prescribes EpiPens, and as horrifying as it is, those who need but can’t afford the devices face a potentially ‘deadly’ situation!
Mylan, the manufacturer of EpiPen, dramatically raised the price of the allergy injector to about $600, which is shockingly more than a 400 percent hike since they started selling the product back in 2007! As a result of this dramatic price increase, many people — including parents of children who suffer from life-threatening allergies — can no longer afford the necessary device. And as it turns out, that’s a MAJOR problem when it comes to keeping children healthy and safe!

“These people who need [EpiPens], people with extreme allergic reactions, their lives can be threatened — it can result in death,” Dr. Robert J. Bos, an internist & primary care doctor who owns his own private practice in New York City, revealed to us EXCLUSIVELY. “Kids [who suffer from allergies] should always have them in their backpacks.”
Robert described EpiPens as “lifesaving medications used for the most SEVERE types of allergic reactions that result in closed airways and swollen throats.” So we can only imagine how terrifying it must be to not be able to have that remedy on hand if you suffer from intense allergies! And the doctor agrees.
“If you have kids who are allergic and/or asthmatic, they can have sudden severe exacerbations after an episode to, say nuts or strawberries, and everything goes faster in kids,” Robert explained. “If they don’t have that rescue medication with them, or if they don’t have that access to that medical care, it makes them much more vulnerable to health complications and even death.” SO scary!
Sarah Jessica Parker, 51, whose son suffers from a dangerous peanut allergy, has already spoken out about the crazy price surge. In fact, she revealed to fans that she has stepped down from her position as a spokesperson for the makers of EpiPen, saying she was deeply “saddened” and “disappointed” in the brand. We couldn’t agree more, and Robert expressed similar thoughts.
“I think it’s morally and ethically wrong to price gage a medication that is used for immediate lifesaving measures; I find it despicable,” the doctor said. And even worse? At this point in time there’s no alternative to EpiPens. “That makes it even more unethical to do,” Robert pointed out. “It’s a brand monopoly that’s dictated by statutes that give the people the right to be the sole manufacturers, but it’s not very expensive to manufacture.”
Hopefully this whole situation gets sorted out quickly as lawmakers have already called for an investigation into why Mylan has risen EpiPen costs by SO much. Let’s not forget that in 2007 they cost about $57 while today they’re about $600, according to Bloomberg News.
