It’s been 15 years since R&B’s princess, Aaliyah, passed away. In honor of her life and legacy, many of her fans have taken to social media to remember her. That also includes Beyonce, who joined in the celebration by posting a sweet #TBT video of her and the late singer. Watch the video here!
Beyonce, 34, shared an amazing video of her and Aaliyah on the red carpet at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards. In the video, Beyonce is interviewing Aaliyah who had actually just shot her first movie, Rome Must Die. “Ms. Aaliyah, how you doing girl?” Beyonce asked the singer. “So great. So good to see you again,” Aaliyah responded with a smile. When asked what she was looking forward to seeing that night, the “Are You That Somebody” singer said D’Angelo. The late singer and Beyonce hugged and laughed before Aaliyah made her way down the rest of the red carpet. SO sweet!
For those who might not have known, Aaliyah was a star while Beyonce was just coming on the scene with Destiny’s Child. Aaliyah was best known for her singles, “One In A Million,” “Try Again,” and many others. She was beginning an amazing career in acting before her life was tragically cut short. On Aug. 25, 2001 Aaliyah and members of her recording company were killed in a plane crash while they were leaving an airport in the Bahamas. The crew was returning to the United States after shooting her final video “Rock The Boat,” which was later released after her death.
The sad news devastated many fans and closed loved ones to the singer, but her legacy has continued to live on despite her short life. Beyonce isn’t the only icon to remember Aaliyah, either! In addition to thousands of fans who have flocked to Twitter to share their favorite songs and pics of the artist, celebrities who knew her and were inspired by her also paid homage. At the head of the pack is Missy Elliott and Timbaland, two producers who had developed a very close relationship with the singer throughout her career.
“#Aaliyah 15 years later to me feels like just yesterday, Missy said in a sweet message on Instagram. “I can still hear your laughter. I can clearly see us dancing in the studio me u @timbaland @ginuwine Magoo the whole clique we miss u so much there’s not a day u aren’t thought of!… Although there can never be another u it warms my heart to see kids who never got a chance to see your greatness love u now because of your undeniable Catalogue of classic hits u have shared with the World love u your Legacy will 4 ever Live & u will NEVER BE 4gotten.”
