Grace VanderWaal has taken the world by storm with just two performances on ‘America’s Got Talent,’ which makes it clear that she’s already on her way to superstardom. But will she be bigger than Taylor Swift? Howie Mandel thinks so, and I do too!
She’s got the voice, the songwriting skills, and even the hairstyle. Grace VanderWaal may be 14 years Taylor Swift‘s junior, but the 12-year-old America’s Got Talent star is quickly soaring to the same fame that Taylor achieved when she was just starting out in her teens — and Grace is already making a threat to take Taylor’s throne. How? Let’s discuss, shall we?
First and foremost, she’s already the biggest star of AGT this season, and she’s the contestant we’ve seen the least. Her initial golden buzzer-worthy audition had America buzzing about who this little 12-year-old singer was, and the excitement didn’t die at all leading up to her second audition…which wasn’t until more than 2 MONTHS later. Clearly she’s already got the staying power.
But I don’t think the fact that she’s an adorable singing 12-year-old is the sole reason for her buzzworthiness. Sure, her age plays into it, but the true wow factor comes from her ability to write catchy, meaningful songs the way Taylor does. Since I write for a living, I could maybe write a song with relatable lyrics. But putting those words to a melody and playing my own instrument with it? Forget it. And I’m twice Grace’s age.
That being said, there’s so much growth potential for Grace, both in terms of talent and years left in the industry. Those alone have the possibility to push her to a level that Taylor hasn’t even reached yet. If she wins AGT and the $1 million prize on top of that, TSwift better watch her back.
Even if she doesn’t win, Grace will have a record deal in no time. Howie told her after her Aug. 23 performance that industry people have already been hounding him to find out more about Grace, which means that she’s caught the eye of the people who are looking for someone to be their Taylor Swift-type protege. And unlike the era that Taylor was a star in the making, Grace is an up-and-comer in a society that is driven by social media. She’s already benefitted from it, and once music industry folks get a hold of her, I have a feeling Grace will blast off.
Funny enough, I called Grace “the next Taylor Swift” before Simon even said it on the show. Although I will admit that there are acts I like a little more this season (have you seen the family band Edgar?!), the more I listen to Grace’s performances and the other originals on her YouTube channel, she’s growing on me at a rapid pace. With that kind of star power, I think she’ll grow on the rest of the world too — maybe even Taylor Swift herself.
