Sasha Banks lost the WWE Women’s Championship to Charlotte on Aug. 21, after only having a reign for one month, but she remains a fan favorite. Here’s everything you need to know about the pro wrestler’s career, signature style and surprising celebrity connection!
Sasha Banks, 24, has been wrestling since 2010, and she signed with the WWE in 2012. As one of the most famous female wrestlers in the world, she’s earned an impressive roster of titles, not to mention the massive amount of admirers that come with such accomplishments. Here are five things to know about Sasha!
1. Sasha has quite a few names.
Born Mercedes Kaestner-Varnado, Sasha has also gone by Mercedes KV, Mercedes and Miss Mercedes in the ring. On top of that, she has the nickname The Boss.
2. She has a super colorful personal style.
Sasha always rocks a vibrant hair color — currently, it’s a dark magenta — and sparkly, colorful outfits with an open designed sleeve, shorts and boots. True to her nickname, she also sometimes wears a chain with a medallion and rings that say “BOSS”, and special glasses.
3. Snoop Dog is her cousin.
Yep, Sasha is a first cousin of Snoop Dogg, who actually helped her come up with her persona in the ring. They also used to attend wrestling events together when she was a teenager, which probably inspired her career choice. “I remember in 2008 when I took her to WrestleMania in Orlando, she was just a young little teenager, and I took her around to meet everybody that she wanted to meet, and you could just see her face light up,” the rapper has said. “You could tell this is where she belonged.”
4. Sasha is a former WWE Women’s Champion and NXT Women’s Champion.
In 2011, KV defeated Alexxis in an “I Quit” match, winning the Chaotic Wrestling Women’s Championship title. She also defeated Charlotte in 2015 in a four-way match, taking the NXT Women’s Championship. Of course, she lost to Charlotte on Aug. 21, but we’re sure she’ll be back in business once she enters the ring again in September!
5. She will be in a WWE video game.
Sasha will appear in WWE 2K17, thereby making her WWE video game debut. She can’t wait! “When October 11th rolls around, the first thing I’m going to do is play 2K17,” she has said. “I saw a little bit of myself in the game and it looked awesome. It’s a dream come true to be in the game. It’s my first time being in it. And then when you add walking into SummerSlam as Women’s Champion, there are so many things going on in my life and it’s amazing.” Too true.
