It was ‘The Lunatic Fringe’ versus ‘The Showoff’ at ‘SummerSlam!’ Dean Ambrose battled Dolph Ziggler for the WWE World Championship. Though Dolph though he was about to win, Dean countered a huge move to retain the title!
This might have been a “Match of the Year” candidate. Dolph Ziggler, 36, is the WWE Superstar who’s known to “steal the show,” and at SummerSlam on Aug. 21, he tried to steal the World Championship away from Dean Ambrose, 30. The WWE Universe, both at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York, and those watching on the WWE Network, witnessed what WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross, 64, would call a “slobberknocker.”
Dean thought he had the match won after hitting the Lunatic Lariat. He decided to go up top, but Dolph intercepted the champ. Dolph tried to pull off a top-rope facebuster, but Dean knew what Dolph was about to do. Dean countered the move into the Dirty Deeds DDT and after the 3-count, he was still the World Champ.

Leading up to the match, the focus was on Dolph and his inability to “win the big one.” Despite holding the WWE Heavyweight Championship twice, Dolph has never held the WWE World title. Prior to winning the No. 1 contender spot during a Six-Pack Challenge Match, Dolph said he had “lost his way,” per WWE.com, and this shot at Dean’s belt almost seemed like a “do or die” situation for Dolph.
SmackDown Live’s general manager, former-WWE World Champion Daniel Bryan, 35, also thinks Dolph needs to “put up or shut up” at SummerSlam. “I want to see what Dolph says he does all the time and that is ‘steal the show,’” Daniel told Fansided, “I want everyone at the end of SummerSlam to be talking about that match. I think they can do it.”
What a difference a year makes! At SummerSlam 2015, Dolph was busy getting brutalized by Rusev, 30, in a double-count out match. Instead of fighting for a title, Dean and his former-Shield partner, Roman Reigns, 31, were taking on The Wyatt Family in a wild tag-team match! Fast forward to 2016, and it’s like everyone switched dance partners, as Dean and Dolph tore the house down while Roman went after Rusev’s United States championship! Luckily for Rusev’s wife and manager, Lana, 31, there was no cake involved during this event.
What’s next for the WWE World Championship? With Randy Orton, 36, returning to SmackDown Live!, could “The Viper” be the next in line for a shot at the belt? What about The Undertaker, 51? He was seen talking to SmackDown’s Shane McMahon, 46, ahead of SummerSlam, per the International Business Times. Could The Deadman join the SmackDown brand and chase after the gold?
What did you think about Dolph vs. Dean, HollywoodLifers? Did your favorite Superstar walk away the champ?
